The story of CityChurch begins in London, England

When a businessman from Charlotte on a trip to London visited an Anglican church by chance, now St Mary’s Bryanston Square, he was so excited by what he saw he immediately invited the church’s leader to speak to his own church in Charlotte.

That began a relationship between London and a small group of people from Charlotte that has developed over 10 years into the birth of a new church.

What excited that businessman so much in London?

St Mary’s services are deliberately informal with an emphasis on the best contemporary spirit-filled worship. They are authentic, powerful, determinedly ‘religion-free’ and a lot of fun to be at.

But most importantly the services at St Mary’s are all about making space for people to encounter God for themselves; a God who is in the business of changing people’s lives. And that is what is making such a big impact.

And now across the world a number of churches with a similar DNA have been planted from St Mary’s, London.

In 2004, St Pauls Auckland, New Zealand, was planted from St Mary's. Churches have followed in Jacksonville Florida, Exeter England, Afghanistan and Brazil. And friendships have been built with churches in Germany, Uganda and Hungary.

And now our belief is that God is wanting to do the same thing in Charlotte. And we're excited to be here!
